Causes of Snoring

There is no quicker way to ruin a good night’s sleep than by snoring. There are several causes of snoring, all of which lead to the same result, a restless night. Finding the causes of snoring can help lead you to the solution to stop the problem. Some of the causes of snoring can be easily fixed with others taking a major lifestyle change. So before we can discuss how to fix your snoring problems we need to look at the causes of snoring.



One of the leading contributors to the causes of snoring would be excess weight. And that doesn’t mean that you have to be extremely obese, just overweight enough that it would add too much pressure to your diaphragm. If you are overweight then that extra weight will make it harder to breathe even when you are awake. When you lay down to sleep then you are taking that weight and spreading it over your diaphragm making it work harder to get the air in and out of your lungs. This is one of the causes of snoring that would require a lifestyle change to fix. Losing weight would not only be great to help with fixing your snoring but also to help prevent many of the threatening diseases associated with obesity. Diseases such as diabetes, stroke, and heart disease just to name a few are all diseases that you are more likely to get when overweight. So losing weight would not only help relieve one of the causes of snoring but also possibly save your life.

Sleep apnea is also something that is one of the causes of snoring. If you are unfamiliar with sleep apnea it is what happens when you are asleep and your airways constrict, causing you to momentarily stop breathing. Once you have a lack of oxygen when you are asleep your body will wake itself up so that you can breathe again. Snoring caused by sleep apnea is noticeable as you will snore heavily and then stop making any sounds for approximately ten seconds or more. Once you do begin breathing again you will make a loud snort or gasp because your body needs the air readily. There are sleep studies that can monitor your sleeping to let you know if sleep apnea is the reason for your troubles. If it is, a doctor can help you to remedy the problem.

Nasal problems are also one of the causes of snoring. A deviated septum can lead to some loud snoring problems that can only be fixed by the help of a doctor, if fixed at all.

Alcohol consumption before bedtime can be one of the causes of snoring. Alcohol is a type of sedative and works to relax muscles. That might be good if you have sore muscles but not if it relaxes the muscles in your throat and causes you to have problems with snoring. Fortunately this is one of the causes of snoring that are easily fixed as you simply don’t drink alcohol before bedtime. You can still drink it with dinner or any other time but stopping alcohol consumption a few hours before bed is a great idea.
